European Commission consults on revision of ecodesign and energy labelling rules for electronic displays

On Wednesday 13 November, the European Commission launched a 12-week public consultation, running until 5 February 2025, to assess and carry out an impact study on ecodesign and energy labelling rules for electronic displays, with the aim of making displays more energy-efficient in line with technological developments and promoting the circular economy.

This consultation, which follows on from previous calls for contributions, will focus on issues such as sustainability, reparability and recyclability.

Input from manufacturers, consumer groups and other stakeholders will guide the European Commission’s draft regulations, expected in early 2026 (implementing regulation for ecodesign and delegated regulation for energy labelling).

Despite the increase in the number of displays - expected to reach 600 million units by 2030 - and their functionalities, the latest impact study indicated that, under the current rules, total electricity consumption would fall from 84 TWh in 2015 to 62 TWh by 2030.
