13/11/2024 (Agence Europe) – In an open letter to the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and his prime minister, Michel Barnier, some forty civil society organisations call on France to reject the EU/Mercosur trade agreement outright. The associations, including Friends of the Earth, Confédération Paysanne and Greenpeace France, ask the French government to clarify its position on the agreement. They are also calling for the negotiating directive to be re-examined and for the texts to be published. “We are extremely concerned that these negotiations are taking place in total secrecy, behind closed doors”, write the authors of the letter. Finally, they call on the French government to reject the separation of the trade part from the rest of the agreement (a change that would allow this first part to be ratified quickly).
