16/07/2024 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the European Union has decided to extend the framework of restrictive measures until 31 July 2025, i.e. for one year, due to the situation in Lebanon, according to a legal act published on Tuesday 16 July. This sanctions framework, which contains no entries, was adopted on 30 July 2021 (see EUROPE 12773/15). It provides for the possibility of imposing sanctions against persons and entities responsible for undermining democracy or the rule of law in Lebanon. This could include individuals or entities obstructing or undermining the democratic political process, hindering or undermining the implementation of plans to improve accountability and good governance in the public sector or the implementation of essential economic reforms, or committing serious financial misconduct involving public funds and the unauthorised export of capital.
