16/07/24 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 16 July, the European Commission officially adopted a decision confirming Sweden’s membership of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). The EU Council must validate the nomination of the Swedish candidate for the post of Prosecutor by the end of the autumn. Sweden’s accession to the EPPO would bring the number of member countries to 24. “With 24 Member States participating in enhanced cooperation, the role of the public prosecutor as a key player in the fight against fraud against the EU budget will be further strengthened and European taxpayers’ money will be better protected”, said Didier Reynders, European Commissioner for Justice. By the end of 2024, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office will be able to investigate and prosecute fraud affecting EU funds committed in Sweden. (IS)
