On Friday 12 July, the European Commission presented its plan for the next 2 years of the European Student Card Initiative (ESCI), aimed at modernising the digital administration of higher education institutions (HEIs). This initiative aims to facilitate student mobility under Erasmus+ and offer simplified access to services abroad.
For 2024, the main objective will be to optimise the Erasmus without paper (EWP) network. The Commission plans to upgrade all connected systems to the latest version of the digital interinstitutional agreement and to help institutions exchange digital learning contracts, aiming for 95% of learning contracts exchanged via the EWP network by the end of 2025. The European student card platform (ESC-R) will be moved to the Commission’s cloud infrastructure to support the development of virtual European student cards.
In 2025, the simplification of digital processes, such as a virtual European student card in the Erasmus+ mobile application, will be a priority. The consultations called for simpler operational workflows for apprenticeship agreements and the preparation of appointments and transcripts.
In addition, the Commission plans to test a simplified digital infrastructure and train users for widespread adoption of digital appointments and transcripts.
