Final adjustments on eve of election of European Parliament President and Vice-Presidents

On Monday 15 July, the eve of the elections, the European Parliament’s political groups put forward a number of candidates for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency of the European Parliament.

Only The Left group put forward the name of Irene Montero from Spain to compete with the candidate from the European People’s Party group, the Maltese Christian Democrat Roberta Metsola. She is due to be reappointed for a two-and-a-half-year term as President of the European Parliament.

The absence of alternative candidates from the S&D and Renew Europe groups, and even from the Greens/EFA group, seems to reflect the pro-European platform’s desire to respect the European Council’s agreement on the distribution of senior European posts (see EUROPE 13441/1).

The nominations for the fourteen vice-presidencies of the European Parliament (see EUROPE 13451/16) have now been announced, following the ECR Group’s nomination of Latvian Roberts Zīle, already an outgoing vice-president, and Italian Antonella Sberna of the Fratelli d’Italia party.

Poland’s Kosma Złotowski, of the PiS party, is also the Conservative group's candidate for the post of Quaestor.

On Wednesday, MEPs will decide on the numerical strength of the standing committees. According to the draft resolution on the table, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) would have as many MEPs as the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, i.e. 90.

MEPs will also decide on the number of European Parliament interparliamentary delegations with third countries or other jurisdictions, as well as the numerical composition of these delegations.
