15/07/2024 (Agence Europe) – European Commissioners Adina Vălean and Virginijus Sinkevičius, responsible for Transport and the Environment respectively, tendered their resignations on Monday 15 July. They were elected as MEPs in last June’s elections (see EUROPE 13429/2) and had the choice of keeping their current Commission posts or joining the European Parliament. In the absence of the nomination of a replacement by the respective countries of the two elected representatives, Virginijus Sinkevičius' portfolio will be managed by Maroš Šefčovič, currently in charge of the ‘Green Deal’, and Adina Vălean’s portfolio will be taken over by Wopke Hoekstra, in addition to his Climate portfolio. Two other Commissioners were elected as MEPs on 9 June: Valdis Dombrovskis (Economy that Works for People, and Trade), who has been reappointed by Latvia as a candidate for the post of Commissioner, and Dubravka Šuica (Democracy and Demography) from Croatia.
