European Commission clarifies how to indicate energy labelling classes in visual advertising

Following a judgment by the Court of Justice of the EU in October 2023 on the energy labelling of ovens and cooker hoods, on Monday 15 July the European Commission published a clarification on energy labelling in advertising and promotional material for a number of products.

According to the judgment, it is not enough to indicate the class of the product (e.g. ‘A’ or ‘B’); the corresponding range of classes must also be indicated (e.g. ‘A++ to D’ or ‘A to G’).

Since 2021, the energy labelling rules have been updated for certain product categories. However, “for products that have not yet been rescaled, the most efficient class may vary between ‘A’ and ‘A+++’, and the least efficient is not always ‘G’”, the Commission points out in a press release.

From now on, economic operators must use a pictogram (the letter in an arrow) next to the range of classes concerned.

The relevant pictograms for ovens and cooker hoods will be available in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) during 2024. Pictograms will follow for other product groups concerned.
