15/07/2024 (Agence Europe) – On 10 July, the two German parties CDU/CSU (EPP group in the European Parliament) published a position paper in which they call on the European Commission to establish a European Steel Pact. In the document, the two parties set out measures to support the steel sector in Europe, which is suffering from unfair competition and high energy prices. To protect this industry, the EU must continue to mobilise its trade defence tools, and do so more quickly. Another solution is to promote ‘Made in Europe’ products. This could be done “through green pilot contracts in public procurement”, suggests German MEP Christian Ehler (EPP). Other areas of work include measures to make CBAM more effective, and guaranteeing competitive energy prices. To see the document (in German), go to https://aeur.eu/f/d1c (LM)
