Food chain and post-2027 CAP among priorities of Hungarian Presidency of EU Council

On Monday 15 July in Brussels, István Nagy, the Hungarian Minister of Agriculture, confirmed the known priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council in the field of agriculture, including the future of the common agricultural policy (CAP) and measures to strengthen the position of farmers in the food supply chain (see EUROPE 13450/13).

No delegation made any statement after the Hungarian priorities were presented (see EUROPE 13443/11).

Mr Nagy did not refer to the proposals on new genomic techniques (see EUROPE 13451/7), but he cited in particular the proposals currently being negotiated on plant reproductive material, the forest monitoring framework and animal welfare. The goal of reducing food waste was also mentioned.

The EU Council is expected to adopt conclusions on the post-2027 CAP “addressed to the European Commission”, taking into account, according to the Hungarian Minister, the strategic dialogue on the future of EU agriculture, which is due to be completed by the end of the summer.

Mr Nagy also highlighted the protein strategy and the bioeconomy.

The informal meeting of EU agriculture ministers will take place from 8 to 10 September in Budapest, to “launch the political debate” on the post-2027 CAP, said Mr Nagy. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
