On Thursday 20 June, the European Commission launched a consultation to assess the effectiveness of common fisheries policy (CFP) measures.
This consultation, which will run until 6 September 2024, is the first part of an in-depth assessment of how well the CFP has achieved its objectives since 2013: the long-term sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture, the contribution to protecting the marine environment, the availability of food supplies and a fair standard of living for fishing and aquaculture communities. The consultation targets stakeholders (fishermen, NGOs, national administrations from Member States, etc.)
A second consultation, which will include a questionnaire focusing on specific aspects of the evaluation, will be launched in the coming months.
The results of the consultations will be used to assess the CFP’s ability to achieve its objectives. The Commission will publish a summary report on the consultations in early 2025.
In February 2023, the Commission presented a Fisheries and Oceans package that did not include a reform of the CFP.
