The European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) ultimately decided not to vote on Dennis Radtke’s (EPP, German) mandate on European Works Councils during this legislature and opted not to call an extraordinary meeting (see EUROPE 13383/13), Agence Europe learned on Wednesday 17 April.
The MEPs had approved the German’s report on 3 April at the last formal EMPL meeting, but the vote on the mandate was postponed due to a lack of attendance. They have since abandoned the matter. The report will therefore be dealt with under the ‘unfinished business’ procedure, with the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs of the next European Parliament responsible for reactivating it.
The EU Council, for its part, looked at an initial compromise on 11 April (see EUROPE 13381/8). A number of delegations felt that this draft, which in some respects weakens the revision proposed by the Commission, is a step in the right direction, but clarification was requested on the definition of transnational issues, parity in EWCs and sanctions.
The Belgian Presidency of the EU Council will submit a new text for the working group on 29 April. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
