European Council underlines EU’s strategic interest in developing a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with Ankara

17/04/2024 (Agence Europe)European leaders underlined, on Wednesday 17 April, the EU’s “strategic interest” in a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean and in developing a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with Turkey. They have asked their ambassadors to the EU to advance work on the recommendations in the Joint Communication of the High Representative and Commission (see EUROPE 13392/4) in a “phased, proportionate and reversible” manner. “Turkey’s own constructive engagement will be instrumental in advancing the various areas of cooperation identified in the joint communication”, according to the European Council, recalling that in this respect, the EU attached particular importance to the resumption of and progress in the Cyprus settlement talks in order to further strengthen cooperation between the EU and Turkey.
