European Commission mobilises additional €1.4 billion to support Horizon Europe 2023-2024 work programme

On Wednesday 17 April, the European Commission announced the adoption of a modification to the 2023-2024 work programme for the European framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe. The amendment will see the mobilisation of previously unallocated funds underHorizon Europe, bringing the budget for the period concerned to €7.3 billion, an increase of almost €1.4 billion.

EU Missions. The amended programme will allocate €648 million to new actions related to the EU Missions in 2024. These actions will include the restoration of at least 25,000 km of free-flowing rivers in Europe, the signing of 100 ‘Climate City’ contracts and support for young cancer patients.

New European Bauhaus. The new work programme earmarks €20 million to prepare for the implementation of the New European Bauhaus mechanism, an initiative that aims to integrate the benefits of the European Green Deal into the daily lives of Europeans.

The new New European Bauhaus facility provides for multi-annual budgetary support for the period 2025-2027 based on two pillars.

The first pillar concerns research and innovation (R&I), with a view to developing new ideas in the context of the Green Deal. The second pillar is devoted to the roll-out of such solutions.

Experimental actions to attract newcomers. The amendment also introduces a series of experimental actions that will allow new ideas to be tested in order to open up Horizon Europe and attract newcomers. These actions will have a budget of €76 million.

Cultural heritage. The amendment also allocates €48 million to the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage. This is a new digital space that will complement the common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage, funded under the Digital Europe programme.

Pandemic preparedness. The new work programme includes a €50 million investment in a European pandemic preparedness partnership.

Preparing for 2025. Finally, the amendment includes various calls for proposals for 2025. The European Commission stresses that in 2025, a specific work programme will cover the deployment of all the actions for 2025. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
