Growing public interest in European elections, according to Eurobarometer survey

Given the current geopolitical situation, more than eight out of ten Europeans (81%) believe that voting in the European elections is becoming more important, and more than seven out of ten (71%) say they are likely to go to the polls, according to the results of a Eurobarometer survey published on Wednesday 17 April, the last before the European elections in June.

This poll shows a positive upward trend in the main electoral indicators, according to a European Parliament press release. Interest in the elections, knowledge of the date on which they will be held and the likelihood of voting are all indicators that have increased compared to a previous survey carried out in autumn 2023 (see EUROPE 13308/24).

I call on our fellow citizens to vote in the forthcoming European elections, in order to strengthen European democracy and shape the future of Europe,” said the President of the Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

According to the Eurobarometer survey, respondents would like the fight against poverty and social exclusion (33%) and support for public health (32%) to be the main themes of the election campaign. The importance that citizens attach to the defence and security of the EU has increased over the course of the legislature, particularly in the light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, especially in Denmark, Finland and Lithuania.

The survey was carried out by Verian (formerly Kantar) in February in all EU Member States, via over 26,000 face-to-face interviews.
