According to various sources, it is becoming unlikely that the European Parliament’s two draft reports on the ‘single currency’ package will be put to the vote in plenary before the end of the current parliamentary term.
The two draft reports are led by Stefan Berger (EPP, German). One concerns the European Commission’s proposal on the digital euro (see EUROPE 13211/11). It had already been submitted later than planned (see EUROPE 13350/24). The other concerns the Commission’s proposal to provide legal tender status for euro banknotes and coins (see EUROPE 13211/12).
While some sources still want to wait for the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) meeting agenda for 18 April, Paul Tang’s team (S&D, Dutch) was categorical on Thursday 11 April: the reports will not be voted on in committee and will therefore not reach the plenary under the current legislature, because the rapporteur is blocking the two reports.
At the time of going to press, Stefan Berger had not yet responded to our requests, but had indicated at a conference at the Representation of the State of Hesse to the EU that it was important not to proceed too hastily. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
