11/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 10 April, the European Parliament adopted by 341 votes to 268, with 14 abstentions, a provisional agreement with the Council of the European Union on the regulation setting CO2 emission standards for new heavy commercial vehicles (see EUROPE 13331/15). It includes a roadmap that sets out a reduction in emissions of 15% by 2025, 45% by 2030, 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2040 compared with 2020 levels. These targets will apply to HGVs weighing over 7.5 tonnes and buses, as well as to commercial vehicles such as refuse collection trucks, tippers and concrete mixers from 2035. For new city buses, the targets set include a 90% reduction in emissions by 2030 and a 100% reduction by 2035. The EU Council approved the agreement in February (see EUROPE 13349/36).
