On Thursday 11 April, the European Commission published a document on post-quantum cryptography, with the aim of encouraging Member States to develop and implement a harmonised approach at EU level.
The Commission intends to develop a comprehensive strategy for the adoption of post-quantum cryptography, to ensure a coordinated and synchronised transition among the different Member States and their public sectors. This strategy should set define “clear goals, milestones, and timelines resulting in the definition of a joint [...] Roadmap”. The aim is to achieve widespread use across the EU27, and thus greater security and strategic autonomy in the digital sector.
The recommendation complements work already carried out by several countries to develop and select algorithms, including research efforts carried out by EU-funded projects, the recent report by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and discussions at international level, such as within the EU-US Trade and Technology Council (‘TTC’).
The Commission also mentioned this cryptography method in its ‘white paper’ on the future of European telecommunications and infrastructure security.
