11/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – During a visit to the Max Planck Institute with the Minister-President of Bavaria, Markus Söder, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke on Thursday 11 April about support for nuclear fusion research. She pointed out that the EU supported research under Euratom and was the main contributor to ITER, with €5.6 billion earmarked for it in the current EU budget. She stressed the need to further promote public-private partnerships, in particular to support young technology companies. The President also stated that industry in Europe should be encouraged to invest more in fusion technologies. Finally, stressing the importance of the spill-over effects of research in this area, she said that fusion technology should be taken out of the laboratories and turned into an economic argument.
