11/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 11 April, the European Commission officially registered the ‘My Voice, My Choice’ European citizens’ initiative, which aims to guarantee safe and legal access to abortion throughout the EU. This initiative comes as the European Parliament is calling for the right to a safe abortion to be incorporated into the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (see other news). The organisers’ aim is to push the Commission to propose financial support for Member States to facilitate abortions. However, this approach is limited to the EU’s competence in terms of health policy, and does not confer a right to abortion at European level. The organisers now have six months to start collecting signatures. If the initiative collects one million signatures from at least seven Member States in one year, the Commission will have to respond. The initiative: https://aeur.eu/f/bqj (NP)
