A number of EU farming organisations are calling on European Parliament to correct its position on plant reproductive material

On Thursday 11 April, a coalition of EU farming organisations, including Copa Cogeca, Euroseeds and Coceral (cereals), asked MEPs to correct the draft report by Herbert Dorfmann (EPP, Italian), which amends the European Commission's proposal on plant reproductive material (seeds).

The text, as amended by the European Parliament Agriculture Committee, “risks compromising the balance of the initial proposal by introducing significant exemptions that could potentially lead to an uncontrolled market lacking official control and traceability”, are the concerns of farming organisations (see EUROPE 13374/13).

The amendments retained in the draft report provide for the introduction of an annex with maximum quantities of seed that would fall outside the scope of the minimum rules (controls, obligation to keep a register, etc.).

A plenary debate on seeds is scheduled for Tuesday 23 April in Strasbourg, prior to a vote the following day. The EU Council has not yet adopted its position.
