With 34 votes in favour, one against and one abstention, the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism adopted its position on the European Declaration on Cycling (see EUROPE 13264/15) on Wednesday 14 February.
This Declaration provides a list of principles and recommendations for boosting cycling in Europe. “Cycling is a fantastic means of transport and a great industrial opportunity for the European Union”, the rapporteur, Karima Delli (Greens/EFA, French), said in a press release.
This statement follows on from the European Parliament resolution adopted in February 2023, sponsored by the MEP (see EUROPE 13123/7). This declaration encourages Member States to introduce measures to make bicycles more accessible. It also has a major industrial component, which consists of encouraging the development of a sovereign European industry by increasing European production of bicycles and components.
“I call on the Member States to play their part in the European score. Safe infrastructure, reduced VAT, kilometre-based cycling allowances, secure car parks – these are concrete actions that can be implemented quickly. They have the impetus to do so”, said Ms Delli.
