MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) have postponed their decision to bring an action against the European Commission before the Court of Justice of the EU, seeking to annul the unfreezing of cohesion funds for Hungary (see EUROPE 13313/14).
An exchange of views in the JURI Committee was initially scheduled for Tuesday 13 February, but will be rescheduled for March.
On Thursday 17 January in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted a resolution denouncing the European Commission’s actions in relation to Hungary, which benefited from the release of €10.2 billion in December, despite ongoing breaches of the principle of the rule of law (see EUROPE 13331/1). The resolution instructs the JURI Committee to prepare the appeal to recover these funds.
“This is not a sudden decision”, Parliament said on Tuesday. The Legal Service and the MEPs on the JURI Committee would like to devote more time to analysing the dossier. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
