13/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission has announced that it has authorised, subject to conditions, the proposed acquisition of Asiana by Korean Air. The Commission opened an in-depth investigation into this project on 17 February 2023 (see EUROPE 13124/19). It concluded that the initially notified transaction could affect competition on the markets for air cargo transport services between Europe and South Korea, and on the market for air passenger transport services on routes between Seoul and certain European destinations. The clearance is conditional on the implementation of remedies including the divestment by Korean Air ofAsiana’s global cargo business and the provision of necessary assets to its competitor T’way to enable the latter to initiate passenger flights on four overlapping routes.
