European Commission expert group issues recommendations to improve urban mobility

Following its last plenary meeting on Tuesday 16 January, the Commission Expert Group on Urban Mobility (EGUM) adopted its first set of recommendations, published on Monday 12 February (see EUROPE 13287/19). These recommendations focus on three main areas: - prioritising public transport in urban areas; - making public transport more inclusive; - dealing with the labour shortage.

According to the expert group, prioritising public transport in urban areas should enable the operation of multimodal, quicker, more punctual and more reliable services. It recommends developing and modernising public transport networks, providing adequate levels of service and improving the public transport servicescape and the immediate environment.

It also recommends simplifying fares and ticketing processes, using effective data strategies for customer information, and aligning urban development with public transport planning.

Inclusive public transport must take into consideration age, gender, disability and reduced mobility. To improve inclusivity, it is necessary to plan accessibility, design infrastructure and vehicles, raise public awareness and introduce specific pricing grids.

Finally, to tackle the shortage of workers, the experts recommend improving working conditions and offering opportunities for growth.
