EU-made films made up 23% of total film offering in Member States in 2022

In a report on the film offering within the EU that was published on Tuesday, 13 February, the European Audiovisual Observatory reveals that EU films represented 23% of the total offering in Member States in 2022. An additional 10% is attributed to other European films, 8% of which are British.

When only focusing on films released in cinemas in the EU, the share of films from the European Union rises to 30%.

The organisation, which is associated with the Council of Europe, believes that this trend can notably be explained by the fact that American films are less present in cinemas and on video-on-demand platforms—unlike other distribution channels, such as television.

Among the 40,000 different films available on average to an EU consumer via all distribution windows, more than 13,000 were European films, including over 9,000 that were made in the EU.

In all EU countries except France, the majority of these films were non-national works: in 13 EU countries, non-national films thus represented more than 90% of films originating from within the European Union.
