29/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 29 November, by 53 votes to 28 with 4 abstentions, the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety approved the provisional political agreement reached between the European Parliament and the EU Council on the proposal for a regulation on nature restoration (see EUROPE 13290/1). The general aim of the regulation is to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and marine areas by 2030, and will require Member States to adopt measures to restore at least 30% of natural habitat types in poor condition by 2030, at least 60% by 2040 and at least 90% by 2050. Restoration obligations for agricultural land may be suspended if food safety or agricultural production are threatened. The European Parliament vote is expected in early 2024, probably in February.
