Teachers’ incomes vary greatly among EU countries

To mark World Teachers’ Day on Thursday 5 October, the European Commission’s Eurydice network published its annual report on the salaries of teachers and school heads.

The study reveals major income disparities in Europe, not only at the start of their careers, but also in terms of “the potential for salaries to increase throughout their career”. Generally speaking, it notes that at the start of their careers, pre-primary teachers tend to earn less, while secondary school teachers earn more.

The trend depends on the country in question. However, the report notes that in nine countries, teachers’ annual starting salaries fell for all levels of education between 2014/2015 and 2021/2022.

Finally, Eurydice estimates that it takes an average of five years’ professional experience to become a headteacher. However, it points out that in five European education systems, teachers with more than 15 years’ experience earn more or the same as their school heads.
