A new report from the European Commission published on Thursday 5 October shows that the EU’s security of supply has improved in recent years thanks to measures taken by the EU in terms of diversification and savings, in line with the objectives of the REPowerEU strategy, which has also helped to reduce gas imports from Russia.
This report is part of a stocktaking exercise provided for in Regulation (EU) 2017/1938 on the security of EU gas supply. It assesses security of supply measures five years after the regulation came into force and examines future risks and dependencies.
It also looks at the series of additional emergency regulations put in place in the context of the militarisation of gas supplies by Russia, completing the EU’s “gas security” architecture.
The report highlights a number of possible improvements to this architecture and provides food for thought for a potential future proposal from the Commission to revise the regulation. In addition, the report states that the outcome of the current interinstitutional negotiations on the gas package (see EUROPE 13260/5) must be taken into account.
