The proposal to introduce new rules on protection and compensation for rail users facing delays, cancellations or discrimination came into force on Wednesday 7 June.
“We need strong and modern rail passenger rights to attract more people to rail and contribute to our climate goals”, commented the Commissioner for Mobility and Transport, Adina Vălean in a statement.
Adopted in 2021 (see EUROPE 12709/6), this text stipulates that, in the event of a delay of more than 60 minutes, passengers will have the option of having their ticket refunded in full, continuing their journey or being re-routed, at no extra cost, under similar conditions.
Alternative re-routing options will have to be communicated within 100 minutes, failing which passengers will be able to plan their own journey - including with another operator - and obtain a refund of the new ticket. (Original version in French by Anne Damiani)
