23 organisations present a roadmap for achieving ‘REPowerEU’ objectives for heat pumps

To overcome the challenges hindering the development of the European heat pump industry in the face of the objectives set by ‘REPowerEU’, 23 organisations, including industry players, governments and NGOs, have collaborated to draw up a roadmap. Entitled the ‘Heat Pump Accelerator’, this initiative by the European Heat Pump Association and the European Climate Foundation was presented to the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, on Tuesday 6 June.

The main limitations identified include high initial and operating costs, a lack of clear information for consumers and a shortage of qualified installers. Solutions have been put forward.

Firstly, to make clean heating the norm, by raising consumer awareness of the benefits of heat pumps and promoting their widespread adoption.

Supporting the leadership of European industry would also ensure that European companies remain at the forefront of innovation, manufacturing and implementation.

In addition, it was asked to increase the integration of the energy system with flexible heat pumps and to make things easier for consumers in terms of information and accessibility. Finally, it was recommended that skills and manpower be developed to meet growing demand.

The Commission has undertaken to publish its first action plan for heat pumps by the end of 2023 (see EUROPE 13173/3).
