Italian Data Protection Authority lifts its ban on ChatGPT artificial intelligence system access

02/05/2023 (Agence Europe)On Friday, 28 April, the Italian Data Protection Authority lifted its block on access to the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) system in Italy (see EUROPE 13172/12).

Its access had been blocked at the end of March by the Italian authority, which accused ChatGPT of not respecting EU rules on personal data protection. The Italian authority also criticised the generative AI system for not verifying the age of users under 18 as well as for not having an informative note addressed to users that explains how the data being used to train the algorithms running ChatGPT are collected.

In order to justify its decision, the Italian Data Protection Authority indicated that it had noted “steps forward [...] to reconcile technological advancements with respect for the rights of individuals”. (TM)
