The European Defence Agency (EDA) and the United States Department of Defense (DoD) signed an administrative arrangement on Wednesday 26 April for enhanced transatlantic defence cooperation (see EUROPE 13116/20).
Specifically, the arrangement will allow for a substantial defence dialogue on all matters within the Agency’s competence. The Department of Defense may be invited to attend relevant meetings of the EDA Steering Board and the EDA to meetings convened by the Department, as appropriate.
In addition, the arrangement should allow for consultations to take place on military mobility, the impact of the EU Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), supply chain issues and the impact of climate change on defence.
The arrangement identifies a number of activities, but no specific projects have yet been identified at this stage.
While the scope of cooperation could be extended in the future, the current arrangement does not cover activities within the areas of capacity building and research and technology.
