The European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee adopted its position on new rules for labelling organic pet food on Tuesday 25 April.
The report by Martin Häusling (Greens/EFA, German) on this dossier was adopted with 45 votes in favour, one against and one abstention.
To avoid wasting products and packaging materials, MEPs propose a six-month transitional period during which the current stock of organic pet food could be sold without the new mandatory EU organic logo being added to its packaging.
MEPs also request that special labels be made available to producers of organic pet food of which main ingredients stem from hunting and fishing.
The Agriculture Committee also decided to open negotiations with the Council of the EU to finalise the content of the regulation in question. The decision on the opening of these negotiations is expected to be announced during the European Parliament’s plenary session on 8 to 11 May.
If there are no objections in plenary, negotiations between the European Parliament and the Member States can start as soon as the EU Council is ready. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
