The Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) is updating its price assessment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices, it has noted in a press release, ahead of the publication of its LNG benchmark due on 31 March. The aim of the index is to ensure greater market transparency based on mandatory reporting.
In accordance with Council Regulation (EU) 2022/2576, ACER has been publishing a daily assessment of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) price since 13 January in order to better reflect the price of LNG spot transactions. On 8 March, ACER will start applying an updated version (Beta 2.0) of the LNG price assessment methodology.
The current methodology requires a minimum of 5 spot transactions to take place over 5 rolling days, but on some days there are not sufficient eligible LNG transactions. After monitoring the initial methodology for a few weeks, ACER decided to update it. The new version will have a greater focus on the most recent transactions and will extend the calculation window to 10 days. In addition, the agency will calculate a single EU LNG price, in addition to the current practice of calculating prices for two zones (North West Europe and South Europe). These changes “will increase the robustness of the LNG price calculation”, said ACER.
