European Commission proposal on new NAFO rules

06/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 3 March, the European Commission adopted a proposal to transpose conservation measures applicable in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) Regulatory Area into EU law. The rules concern: - new duties of flag Member States to submit research plans; - the Regulation of trial tow upon first entry into a division as part of a fishing trip; - adjustments to redfish closures in Area 3M; - the prohibition of landing, transhipping and retention of Greenland shark; - cross-listing of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) vessels with other regional fisheries management organisations.
