Poland reiterates its request to not have to pay daily fines following EU Court of Justice ruling in late 2021

04/11/2022 (Agence Europe)The European Commission said on Friday 4 November that it had received a new letter from the Polish government asking it to cease its demands for daily fine payments as decided by the EU Court of Justice in late 2021. Warsaw had already sent a letter before the summer, the Commission added, but its position remains unchanged. The Commission will demand payment of these fines until Warsaw has complied with all the demands of the EU Court of Justice on the disciplinary chamber of the Polish Supreme Court. To date, the Commission has issued “10 calls for payments (since November 2021) and the last one was on 28 October”, the institution added. The Court decided in October 2021 to impose a daily fine of €1 million on Poland in respect of the continued activities of the Supreme Court’s disciplinary chamber despite a specific judgment (see EUROPE 12762/23, 12821/1)(SP)
