04/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 4 November, the European Commission adopted a proposal to implement in EU law the conservation, management and control measures adopted under the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA). The SIOFA is the regional fisheries management organisation (RFMO) responsible for the management of fishery resources in the SIOFA’ area of application. The measures concern different rules, including on bottom fishing (including the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems), the protection of marine species (a ban on large pelagic driftnets and deepwater gillnets and a reduction of incidental catches of seabirds), and control measures (vessel monitoring system or VMS).
