The Council of the EU and the European Parliament started interinstitutional negotiations (trilogues) on Thursday 8 September on legislation concerning the deployment of sustainable fuels in the aviation sector (‘ReFuelEU Aviation’) (see EUROPE 12992/9).
The challenge, said Cláudia Monteiro de Aguiar, shadow rapporteur on behalf of the EPP, will be to achieve a “balanced” legislative framework, in order to “encourage investment” and ensure “fairness in this transition and a level playing field for the industry”.
“Otherwise, we will only create more burdens for businesses and, in particular, for citizens”, she added.
Several technical meetings are scheduled - on 16 and 30 September and 7 October - before the second trilogue, which should take place on 13 October. Other technical meetings will then take place between now and the third round of interinstitutional discussions, scheduled for 28 November. A fourth trilogue could take place “early or mid-December”, a source told EUROPE.
As a reminder, Parliament had adopted its position - and its negotiating mandate with the Council of the EU - on 7 July (see EUROPE 12988/1). The Council of the EU, for its part, adopted its position on 2 June 2022 (see EUROPE 12964/3). (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
