28/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – On 28 July, the European Commission did not want to give further details of the number of civil servants and officials who have been tapped by the Israeli spyware Pegasus, beyond the proven case made public earlier this year of the spying on Commissioner Didier Reynders’ phone. Spokesperson Eric Mamer was reacting to a letter from the same commissioner sent on 25 July to Dutch MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld (Renew Europe), revealed by Reuters, according to which the Commission has indeed found “indicators of compromise”, i.e. signs that smartphones of Commission officials could have been rigged by Pegasus. “The Commission is doing everything to limit the risk of such attacks”, the spokesperson added. The Dutch MEP is in charge of the report of the European Parliament’s PEGA Committee of Inquiry on the use of software in the EU. (SP)
