Agri-food trade up compared to 2021, but down in recent months

Trade in agri-food products in April 2022 increased by 14% compared to the same month last year to reach €31.4 billion, according to figures published by the European Commission on 28 July. This is due in particular to strong growth in exports of butter (+69%), wheat (+25%) and maize (46%) compared to 2021. However, imports (+28%) increased more than exports (+10%).

In contrast, month-on-month, European agri-food exports fell by 5.4% from March to April 2022. Russia (-26%) and China (-11%) are the main destinations affected, with a drop in exports of pork, cereals and rapeseed to these countries.

The EU also imported fewer agri-food goods in April than in March (-1.2%). This is due to a drop in world prices and in the quantities imported, especially for cereals, according to the Commission.
