07/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 7 July, MEPs David McAllister (EPP, Germany), Tomas Tobé (EPP, Sweden), Isabel Santos (S&D, Portugal), Nathalie Loiseau (Renew Europe, France), and Mónica Silvana González (S&D, Spain) called for the Bab al-Hawa humanitarian aid corridor in northwest Syria to remain open. “[The] delivery of humanitarian aid must not be politicised. We cannot abandon the Syrian people,” they emphasised in a press release. The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote on the renewal of the corridor on 10 July. “In order to avoid a major humanitarian crisis in the region, it is vital that humanitarian aid to civilians [be] allowed to continue,” these MEPs felt. According to them, 4.4 million Syrians in the northwest of the country depend on the cross-border delivery of humanitarian assistance for their daily survival. (CG)
