The European Commission adopted, on Wednesday 6 July, an €11 billion partnership agreement with Bulgaria which sets out the country’s investment strategy under the cohesion policy.

The agreement, which covers 10 national programmes, will aim to promote economic, social and territorial cohesion in the Bulgarian regions while stimulating climate and digital transitions.

Almost half of the total funding, €4.2 billion, will be invested in the Northwest, North Central and Northeast regions, including in co-financing the construction of the first tunnel through the Balkan Mountains, according to a Commission statement.

An envelope of €2.4 billion from the ERDF and the Cohesion Fund will help Bulgaria meet its climate commitments. The Just Transition Fund will provide €1.3 billion to ensure a socially and economically sustainable transition.
