Renew Europe Group in European Parliament presents its ideas on food security during times of war in Ukraine

The working group of the Renew Europe political group in the European Parliament, which was set up at the end of April, published as announced (see EUROPE 12986/24) its ideas on how to ensure food security in times of war in Ukraine on Thursday 7 July.

Heading the working group, Dacian Cioloș (Renew Europe, Romania) called on the EU to “rethink the link between sustainability and food production” in the ‘Farm to Fork’ and ‘biodiversity’ strategies.

The former European Commissioner for Agriculture identifies an intermediate way to combine maintaining production capacity with sustainability. “The solution is not to set aside policies that promote sustainability, but to select certain measures”, he said.

Among the priorities identified, the acceleration of the marketing of alternatives to chemical pesticides and fertilisers and the launch of a European strategy to develop protein production.

Renew Europe also stresses the need to develop “solidarity corridors” to export Ukrainian grain currently blocked in Black Sea ports due to the war started by Russian.

Finally, the Group calls for the creation of an international mechanism to anticipate and respond to food crises.
