European Commission calls for contributions to evaluate ‘Ship Recycling’ Regulation

The European Commission is starting its work to assess the effectiveness, relevance and added value of Regulation (EU) 1257/2013 on ship recycling and is seeking input from the public and stakeholders.

This regulation aims to prevent, limit and eliminate adverse effects on human health and the environment arising from the recycling, operation and maintenance of EU-flagged ships.

A call for contributions was launched on 2 June to gather as many views as possible by the end of the month before the evaluation is published by the Commission in the third quarter of 2023.

In particular, the evaluation will assess the extent to which the Regulation has been applied and its impact to date, as well as identify any shortcomings in its implementation and enforcement.

The extent to which the regulation is consistent with broader EU policy objectives, including those of the European Green Deal, the 2nd EU Circular Economy Action Plan and the Zero Pollution Action Plan, will also need to be considered.

Article 30 of the Regulation requires the European Commission to review the text by 31 December 2023.

The call for evidence is open online until midnight, 30 June. To give feedback: https://aeur.eu/f/1xu (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
