The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published on Thursday 2 June a guide for the assessment of transit points and accommodation centres in the European Union and the European Economic Area for refugees displaced due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
This guidance addresses public health considerations and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) measures both at border entry points for refugees fleeing Ukraine and at reception and shelter centres.
The guidance is aimed at national and local authorities and UN staff. The document includes checklists in the annex. The guide also lists existing resources such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ 2022-2025 Comprehensive Public Health Strategy, guidelines developed by the European Union Agency for Asylum, studies on physical infrastructure, and useful documents on health services and health information. The document is subject to change and adaptation to the different contexts of States hosting refugees from Ukraine.
