03/06/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission opened a public consultation on Wednesday 1 June to improve the certification scheme for train drivers across the EU. Pointing to the discrepancies that persist in the certification scheme at national level and among railway undertakings and deeming the certification requirements for train drivers “outdated”, the European Commission proposes several strategies. In addition to the possibility of maintaining the rules as they are, the European Commission also proposes that certification be organised by the Member State itself through bodies that would be accredited at national level. In addition, the European Commission proposes that a single train driver’s licence be introduced at European level as part of a common system. Finally, the European Commission suggests that certification could also be carried out by means of a common system for which the European Union Agency for Railways would be responsible.
