EU taxonomy, broad coalition of MEPs tables proposal to object to delegated act on gas and nuclear

A group of MEPs from the EPP, S&D, Renew Europe, Greens/EFA and The Left groups tabled a draft resolution on Friday 20 May to reject the European Commission’s delegated act to include fossil gas and nuclear energy in the EU taxonomy as ‘transitional’ activities.

Michael Bloss (Greens/EFA, Germany), one of the MEPs who initiated the draft resolution, said that the Parliament was showing a rare “unity”.

Adopted by the European Commission on 2 February (see EUROPE 12882/1), this draft delegated act has since been the target of strong criticism, both in the European Parliament (see EUROPE 12912/20) and among the Member States (see EUROPE 12953/25).

It also faces opposition from the ‘Platform on Sustainable Finance’ (a stakeholder group advising the Commission on taxonomy - see EUROPE 12875/9, 12911/22).

Noting these criticisms, the draft resolution points out that the proposed complementary delegated act would increase “the complexity of decision-making for institutional and retail investors and create additional administrative burdens for financial institutions”.

According to our information, the draft resolution will be put to the vote in the Environment Committee (ENVI) and the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) between 14 and 16 June. The final vote in plenary will take place in the first week of July.

The Parliament has until 11 July to oppose the delegated act. This requires an absolute majority (353 votes).
