Brussels, 20/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – The report published by the European Commission on Friday 20 May shows a deterioration of the “one country, two systems” principle between China and Hong Kong since the implementation of the National Security Law in 2020. The EU notes, for 2021, mass arrests of activists, the increasing absence of opposition and civil society organisations and restricted freedom of assembly in Hong Kong. In early May, the EU and the G7 expressed concern about the appointment of the new Hong Kong Chief Executive (see EUROPE 12948/18). The EU has also published a report on political and economic developments in the Macao Special Administrative Region. Here too, it deplores a restriction of fundamental political rights and freedoms in 2021. See the report for Hong Kong: https://aeur.eu/f/1RC; and the one for Macao: https://aeur.eu/f/1re (LM)
