To help industry and other stakeholders prepare for future restrictions of hazardous chemicals in the EU, the European Commission published on Monday 25 April its roadmap on restrictions/bans envisaged under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation (1907/2006).
The roadmap prioritises group restrictions of substances most harmful to human health and the environment with the same risks, in line with the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability adopted in October 2020 to better protect people and the environment from hazardous chemicals and to encourage innovation to develop safe and sustainable alternatives (see EUROPE 12581/6).
It provides for an evolving list of substances, which will be regularly updated and will serve as a basis for multi-annual planning under REACH, the revision of which is underway (see EUROPE 12873/7).
“Stakeholders need transparency and visibility on future work. The roadmap offers them this visibility”, highlights the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, in a press release.
“These REACH restrictions aim to reduce the exposure of people and the environment to some of the most harmful chemicals by addressing a wide range of their uses - industrial, professional and in consumer products”, says Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius.
